Day 17: Have a Festive Happy Hour

Day 17

Oh, yeah. Whether you’re a cocktail or mocktini kind of person, this is a fun way to spend an hour after a day at the office. Invite a co-worker or a couple of friends to meet you at a bar (or your house if you like) to enjoy something festive.

Not sure what to order (or make)? Don’t worry. I’m here to help:

And if you’re not up for alcohol, here are a few places to look for mocktails:

If you go out, you can also try asking the bartender if they have any specials or seasonal favorites. There are a number of festive wines and beers if that’s more to your taste.

Day 16: Give to a Local Shelter

Day 16

Whether you’re donating some gently used clothes and blankets, sending in cash, or donating some non-perishable food items from your pantry, there are countless ways to make the holidays a little cheerier for people in your community.

Here are some suggestions for ways you can offer support to organizations that support people in your community:

  • Go through your closets and donate non-perishable food items, clothes, home goods, coats, etc.
  • Make a financial contribution. Often times soup kitchens or food banks can buy bulk foods that go a long ways.
  • Give items such as personal hygiene items (including sanitary napkins, shaving gel, etc.), school supplies and more.
  • Donate books and movies to community centers and shelters.
  • Contact a local shelter and find out how you can give your time and energy to helping them fulfill their mission.
  • Research the various types of shelters, food banks, and community outreach organizations in your community and learn about their greatest needs and encourage your friends to provide support.

Taking a few minutes today to do any or all of these things can go a long way to helping out someone in your community.

What are some other ideas and suggestions for supporting shelters/food banks?

Day 15: Treat Yo’ Self to a Holiday Goodie

Day 15

Last Christmas (cue WHAM!) I discovered that I loved close to not one but two cupcake bakeries. And if that wasn’t enough excitement, I found that both had special Christmas varieties available only during December. It became my quest to find and consume all of these treats.

You don’t have to be a glutton like I was, but today is a great day to stop by a bakery or candy shop to find a treat that’s just right for you to enjoy. And because it’s a treat yo’ self day, we’re going to have our cakes (or cookies), eat them, too, and be happy with our splurge.

What’s your favorite Christmas goodie?

Day 14: Read ‘The Gift of the Magi’ by O. Henry

Day 14

One dollar and eight-seven cents is all the money Della has in the world to buy her beloved husband a Christmas present. She has nothing to sell except her only treasure — her long, beautiful brown hair. Set in New York at the turn of the twentieth century, this classic piece of American literature tells the story of a young couple and the sacrifices each must make to buy the other a gift. Beautiful, delicate watercolors by award-winning illustrator Lisbeth Zwerger add new poignancy and charm to this simple tale about the rewards of unselfish love.

This is one of my favorite stories to read each holiday season, and it goes by so quickly (especially with a cup of cocoa or glass of wine). And this is one of those stories that leaves you feeling a little bit happier when you’re done.

You can find it for free on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo.

Day 13: Go Experience a Local Holiday Festivity

Day 13

Sometimes it’s important to take an hour or two and stop to enjoy something happening in your community. Do you have an ice skating rink with a holiday special? Are there some great window displays you’d like to see? Is there a concert or performance of some kind happening somewhere in your town today?

I’m honestly not quite sure where this prompt will take me today, but I’ll be checking my community calendars to find something festive and merry to send me into Monday feeling the Christmas spirit.

What are you up to today?

Day 12: Make a Gingerbread House

Day 12

Oh yeah. This is happening.

Whether you’re a purist who makes your own gingerbread, someone who goes the graham cracker route, or me (the lady who buys a kit at the store) we’re combining our love of candy and our creativity to build gingerbread houses.

And because it’s the season of giving, here’s a list of some online resources to inspire you in this quest:

P.S. We’re officially halfway through the advent season. How are you holding up so far? What has been your favorite activity? What are you most excited for this Christmas?

Day 11: Watch ‘Love Actually’

Day 11

Same drill as last Friday–curl up in front of your TV (or go out to the theater) and enjoy this classic Christmas movie or one from your own collection.

Love Actually is one of my all-time favorites, so you’d better believe I’ll be watching this one. I love the prime minister dancing through his home. I swoon for Jamie and Aurelia falling for each other through kind actions rather than the ability to speak the same language. And any movie with Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman is a winner in my book.

And because it’s an annual thing, I’m going to crack open a bottle of wine, maybe pick up some chocolates, and have a nice little evening at home with the kittens.

Will you join me in a Love Actually session? Or what movie will you watch tonight?
